A pergola cannot be priced from a ready-made list, because two installations of the same square metre area can cost noticeably different amounts once profile section and site access are taken into account. This article explains the eight factors so you can judge a quote yourself.
Why There Is No Price List
A pergola is not a catalogue product; it is a structure made to measure. Quoting a square metre price looks transparent but is misleading: the difference between a 3x3 metre terrace and a 6x6 metre one is not only material volume, the engineering requirement changes too.
A wider span requires thicker profiles, reinforced connections and sometimes an additional column. That is why the cost per square metre is higher on small areas and lower on large ones — and the curve between them is not linear.
If a company gives you a firm square metre price over the phone, it is either assuming a standard profile section or ignoring installation conditions. Either way the final invoice differs from the first figure.
1. Size and Span
The most basic driver is the area to be covered, but the critical figure is the single span rather than total square metres. As the distance crossed without a column grows, the profile section and connection detail change; between a 4-metre and a 7-metre span the material difference increases disproportionately.
In standard systems a single span reaches 6-7 metres. Wider areas are divided with an intermediate column; adding a column reduces cost but splits the usable space. That balance is struck together during the survey.
2. Profile and Louvre Section
Wall thickness feeds directly into price. Standard profiles use 2-2.5 mm and heavy-duty profiles 3-4 mm. A one-millimetre difference between two systems that look identical corresponds to a real difference in wind and snow load resistance.
When comparing quotes, asking about profile wall thickness is the fastest way to understand where a price difference comes from. Alloy grade matters too: 6063-T6 is standard for structural profiles.
- Standard profile (2-2.5 mm): residential terraces, sheltered locations
- Heavy-duty profile (3-4 mm): coastal sites, high altitude, wide spans
- Louvre width: 150 mm economical, 200 mm cleaner look and higher unit cost
3. Motor and Control
A manual crank is the most economical option and can be sufficient in small residential installations. Motorised systems use 230V tubular motors. European motors are quieter and longer-lived; quality motors exceed 50,000 opening and closing cycles.
In commercial use a redundant motor is preferred: if one motor fails the system keeps working and a restaurant terrace does not become unusable.
4. Sensors and Automation
Sensors look like comfort items but their real function is damage prevention. A rain sensor closes the system when the user is not at home. A wind sensor moves the louvres to a safe position above a set speed and keeps the system within its resistance range.
Smart home integration with Google Home, Alexa or Apple HomeKit requires an additional module. For daily use a wall switch is enough for most people; the app matters mainly to those who need remote control.
5. Lighting and Colour
IP65 LED strips recessed into the profile and a dimming system increase the cost. Standard RAL colours are included in the price; wood-effect lamination and custom colours require an extra production step and are priced separately.
Lighting can be added later, but a solution recessed into the profile is only possible during production. Surface-mounted strips added afterwards leave visible cabling.
6. Side Enclosure System
Closing the sides of a pergola is a separate system and a significant part of the total budget. A zip screen is the most economical solution; guillotine and sliding glass cost noticeably more but make the space heatable and usable in winter.

7. Installation Conditions and Ground
Ground type, mounting height, crane requirements and site access all change labour time. There is a real difference in both time and cost between anchoring into concrete and pouring a foundation on soil.
This item cannot be estimated reliably without seeing the site — which is the main reason the survey is free.
- Concrete: direct anchoring, fastest and most economical installation
- Tiled surfaces: the load-bearing layer beneath the tiles must be checked
- Soil: a foundation is required, increasing time and cost
- Upper floors or restricted access: crane or manual handling extends labour time
8. Guarantee and After-Sales
Guarantee scope is often overlooked when comparing prices. Ten years on structure and profiles, five on motors and three on coating are typical figures. Whether installation workmanship is covered should be asked separately.
When the same company manufactures and installs, the point of contact does not change if a problem appears later. Where subcontractors are used, responsibility often ends up between the parties.
Three Common Budget Traps
Budgets usually overrun on three unexpected items: a side enclosure added later, lighting requested after the fact, and underestimated ground preparation. All three are cheaper and cleaner if discussed at the design stage.
Leaving the Side Enclosure Until Later
If the pergola goes up first and glazing is wanted a year later, whether the existing structure can carry it has to be reassessed. If not, reinforcement is needed, which costs more than building it to the right section from the start.
Asking for Lighting Afterwards
LEDs recessed into the profile can only be done during production. Surface-mounted strips added later leave visible cabling and break the visual integrity of the system.
Underestimating the Ground
An apparently sound tiled surface may have no load-bearing layer beneath. This is discovered during the survey; if it is not, it surfaces on installation day and both time and cost increase.
