What Is a Zip Screen and How Does It Work?
A zip screen is a motorised vertical shading system held permanently taut by zipped guide tracks along both edges of the fabric. Unlike a conventional roller blind, the fabric cannot come out of the track and does not flap in the wind — and the same construction blocks insects.
A zip strip sewn along the fabric edges runs inside the side guide tracks and keeps the fabric under constant tension. The system is motorised and controlled by remote, wall switch or smartphone app. Wind and sun sensors can be integrated.
Zipped Edge Construction
The zip strip at the fabric edge runs inside the side guide tracks and holds the fabric taut at all times. It removes the two biggest weaknesses of a conventional roller blind: coming out of the track, and flapping in the wind.

Fabric Options
Mesh fabric preserves the view while cutting the sun and letting air through. Opaque fabrics give full privacy and deeper shade. A waterproof membrane increases rain protection.

Controlled by remote, wall switch or smartphone app. The sun sensor lowers the screen at a set light level; the wind sensor retracts it for safety.

Advantages of a Zip Screen System
For closing the sides of a pergola or terrace, a zip screen is far more economical than a glass system. It stops sun, wind and most rain — but it does not insulate.
Zip screen or glass?
If the space is used in summer and the shoulder seasons, a zip screen is both sufficient and much cheaper. If you intend to heat the space in winter, guillotine or sliding glass is required. The two can also be combined in the same project.

Does a zip screen hold up in wind?
Yes — this is the fundamental difference from a conventional roller blind. The zip strip along both fabric edges runs inside the side guide tracks and holds the fabric taut at all times, so it cannot come out of the track, flap or be battered by the wind.
Does a zip screen stop rain completely?
With a waterproof fabric a zip screen stops most rain, but water can find its way in at the top and bottom connections, so it does not count as a fully sealed enclosure. Where complete protection from rain and wind is required, a glass system is the right choice.
Does a zip screen insulate?
No. A zip screen cuts sun, wind and most rain, but it provides no thermal insulation. If you intend to heat the space in winter, consider guillotine glass, sliding glass or a winter garden instead.
