What Is a Zip Screen? A Guide to Zipped Shading Systems
A zip screen is a motorised vertical shading system held permanently taut by zipped guide rails on both edges of the fabric. Unlike a conventional blind the fabric cannot leave the track and does not flap in the wind. The same construction also blocks insects at the sides.
How a Zip Screen Works
A zip strip sewn to both edges of the fabric runs inside side guide rails and keeps the fabric under constant tension. The system is motorised; when the fabric rolls up it is concealed inside the head box, and when it comes down it is tensioned along the rails.
In a conventional blind the fabric is free and whips in the wind; over time the edges fray and the system fails. In a zip screen the fabric is locked into the rail on both edges, so this wear does not occur.
That structural difference makes a zip screen noticeably more durable than a conventional blind in outdoor use.
Fabric Options
The fabric choice determines what the zip screen actually does. There are three main groups: mesh fabrics that preserve the view, opaque fabrics that give full privacy, and waterproof membranes that improve rain protection.
Mesh Fabric
Blocks sun while preserving the view and letting air through. The most common choice on terraces with a sea or garden outlook. The view outward is kept while the inside is less visible from outside during the day.
Opaque Fabric
Gives full privacy and deeper shade. Preferred on balconies overlooked by neighbours and in rooms used for daytime sleeping. Air permeability is lower than mesh.
Waterproof Membrane
Improves rain protection. However a zip screen is not a fully sealed enclosure; limited ingress can occur at the top and bottom fixings. Full rain protection requires glass systems.
Wind Resistance and Sensors
The zipped edge keeps the fabric locked into the rail in wind and prevents flapping. Every system still has a limit; a wind sensor rolls the screen up automatically above a set speed, protecting both the fabric and the mechanism.
In exposed locations and near the sea a sensor is effectively essential. Expecting the user to be at home whenever the weather turns is not a workable arrangement.
Insect Protection: An Overlooked Benefit
Because the zipped edge locks the fabric into the rail, insects cannot pass at the sides. A bottom bar seated properly on the floor completes the protection. This is a clear advantage over a conventional blind and usually removes the need for a separate insect screen.
In the Mediterranean climate mosquitoes are a common evening problem; a zip screen therefore effectively extends the usable hours under a pergola.
When Is a Zip Screen the Right Choice?
A zip screen is right when sun and wind control are wanted but thermal insulation is not required. It costs noticeably less than glass systems and is the fastest way to close the sides of a pergola.
The two can also be combined: installations with glass on one elevation and zip screens on another are common and balance the budget.

Size Limits and Installation
Zip screen width and height are limited by fabric type and motor capacity. On very wide openings several units are used instead of one screen; this protects the mechanism and allows partial opening.
The critical installation detail is that the side rails must be exactly parallel. If they deviate the zip can leave the rail; this is the most common installation-related problem with zip screens.
How the bottom bar meets the floor also matters: a gap lets both insects and wind through underneath.
Head Box Types and Appearance
The head box the screen rolls into is the main element determining how the system looks. It can be left exposed or recessed into the pergola profile. A recessed solution looks cleaner but must be planned during production.
Exposed Box
The most common and most economical solution, and the only option when adding to an existing structure. The box can be powder coated in RAL colours to match the building.
Recessed Box
The box sits inside the pergola profile and is invisible from outside. When the system is rolled up nothing is visible. This is only possible if planned during pergola production.
Zip Screens in Winter
A zip screen can be used in winter but does not heat the space, since it provides no thermal insulation. By blocking wind it noticeably raises the perceived temperature; adding a heater extends usable time, but this does not deliver the comfort of a winter garden.
If the fabric is left rolled up through winter, make sure it was dry when rolled. Fabric rolled up damp and left closed for a long period can develop mould; fabrics are mould resistant but that protection is not unlimited.
Maintenance
Zip screen maintenance is simple. Cleaning the fabric surface with water once a year and removing dust from inside the guide rails is enough. Grit collected in the rail is the main factor that makes the zip harder to move.
